The Symphony Musicians of Richmond with Benjamin Zander at St. Michael Catholic Church

Relegated to die a slow death in taxpayer-funded, dead-art appreciation centers, classical music has lost its resonance in modern culture. And that’s sad. Classical music is at the root of virtually every musical form mankind has created, and yet it’s the one most people know nothing about. You’ll get in a good dose from the Symphony Musicians of Richmond, who perform with living legend and classical music’s most vocal advocate and conductor, Benjamin Zander, on Monday, April 28, at St. Michael Catholic Church. The fundraising performance will benefit the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg. Among the orchestras he’s led, Zander conducted the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra for 28 seasons. His recording of Mahler’s Ninth was nominated for a Grammy. In other words, this is one show that you don’t want to miss. Doors open at 7 p.m. Free. saint-mikes.org.
