Articles like “Nocturnal Emissions” (Arts & Culture, Oct. 4) by Wayne Melton are an exact example of the mundane life that Michel Gondry’s character Stéphane is railing against. To wrap this film up into a tiny simplistic box of complexity, to say: ‘Oh well, it was confusing, so it is bad’ … is neither a valid nor solid argument.
The confusing situations that we find ourselves in on a daily basis, life in general — that is what Stéphane is working out in his elaborate dreams. Society’s need to make everything that is different or difficult to understand bad does not pass as a satisfactory synopsis in my book. If at first you don’t comprehend — please try, try again.
